OAKLAND - A malfunctioning fireplace allowed hot ashes to come into contact with the combustible framing of a two-story wood home Tuesday at 1235 Fairview Church Road off U.S. Route 50 and Table Rock Road in Garrett County.

Deputy State Fire Marshal Jason Mowbray's report indicated a total loss of $50,000, including $35,000 on the home and $15,000 on the contents. The report ruled the fire as accidental.

Twenty-five firefighters from Oakland, Deer Park, Gorman, Bayard, Mount Storm and Aurora volunteer fire companies responded to the two-alarm fire. Southern Rescue Squad also responded. Firefighters, called to the scene at 12:33 p.m., had the fire under control in 15 minutes.

The Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office investigated. Garrett County roads department personnel also responded to the incident.

Homeowner Eric Geroski and his family were displaced by the fire and are being assisted by friends and family, according to the state fire marshal's report.
