FROSTBURG — Frostburg State University’s BURG Peer Education Network was recognized for multiple outstanding achievements during the BACCHUS Network’s General Assembly in Columbus, Ohio, during the week of Nov. 15. BACCHUS has more than 1,200 affiliates and more than 600 students from across the country attended the conference.

Five FSU students and their adviser presented “Building Blocks from the BURG: Enhancing Your Peer Education Group” and received excellent feedback on their evaluations. Mark Freeman was selected as the Region 12 Student Advisory Committee member for the second year in a row.

The group was awarded the Outstanding Creativity in Illegal Drug and Drug Misuse Prevention Award for its Sleep, Sex and Substance Abuse Program that was created last year. The focus of the program is to educate freshmen on the issues of sleep problems, sexual wellness and the effects of alcohol. The peer educators utilized clickers, beer goggles and instruction in the BACCHUS Maneuver, which is used on severely intoxicated people while waiting for medical help to arrive, to make the presentation both interesting and informative.

The group also received an Outstanding Recruitment Award for its efforts that resulted in a total membership of 54 FSU students. The team concept has played a vital role in the increase in the group’s membership, according to Don Swogger, adviser for the group.

“We have a student leader who is our recruitment chair; however we believe that the team approach to recruiting is more effective, plus our leaders know that all the leadership roles need general body members to be effectively implemented,” Swogger said.

The FSU BURG Peer Education Network has been educating Frostburg State University students for 21 years and has had many previous successes on campus as well as nationally.
