CUMBERLAND — Howard A. Smith, 87, of Cumberland, died on Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2008 at WMHS-Memorial Campus.

Born Feb. 12, 1921 in Baughman Settlement, McCauley, W.Va., he was the son of the late Grover Cleveland Smith and Nannie Lee (Baughman) Smith. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Mr. Smith was a United States Naval veteran of World War II, serving on the USS Cleveland during the Normandy Invasion. He retired from Kelly Springfield Tire and Rubber Company and was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church. He was also a life member of B.P.O.E. 63 Fraternal Order of the Elks as well as the Fort Cumberland Post 13 American Legion.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 61 years, Betty L. (Cramer) Smith; as well as numerous nieces and nep-hews.

Friends will be received at Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, (www.AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com) on Friday, Nov. 21, 2008 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

A memorial service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, Nov. 21, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Stephen Yelovich officiating.

Interment will be at Maryland State Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap.

Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.

The family requests that memorials be made in his name to the charity of choice.
