James W. "Jim" Paul

James W. "Jim" Paul

MOUNT SAVAGE — James “Jim” Wilbert Paul, 61, passed away suddenly at his home on Dec. 30, 2008 after 13 years battling heart disease. He was unable to be revived by the dedicated Mt. Savage Volunteer Fire Department and went to be with his Creator.

Born March 11, 1947 in Cumberland, he is the son of Wilbert R. Paul, Mt. Savage and the late Elizabeth (Morgan) Paul.

Jim graduated from the largest graduating class of Mt. Savage School in 1965. After graduating he married his high school sweetheart, Bonnie (White) Paul in 1967.

He lived a hard working life as a farmer at Leaning Pine Farm, the Paul Family Farm. He started working as soon as he was big enough to carry a bucket. The farm operated for 60 years as a dairy farm. In 2001 the dairy cattle were sold and the operation shifted to raising grass fed Angus beef. He tried his best to keep farming, even after two heart attacks. He loved the land and the hard work, when it paid off.

Jim enjoyed going to farm auctions and the rebuilding/upkeep of the farm’s Allis Chalmers and John Deere tractors. In the early spring he tapped maple trees for sugar water, which was made into maple syrup. He tried to be a helpful hand with friends and neighbors, as he was a “Jack of all trades.”

Jim belonged to the Mt. Savage United Methodist Church and the Maryland Farm Bureau.

He was preceded in death and welcomed into heaven by his mother, Libby; grandparents, Frank and Arvada (Fair) Paul and Theophilus and Mary (Hammers) Morgan; and his in-laws, Eugene and Edna (Lantz) Ruppert.

Jim leaves behind his wife, Bonnie (White) Paul, of 41 years; two daughters, Kathy Paul-Mauzy and husband Danny, Maysville, W.Va. and Amanda Paul and husband Sam White, Mt. Savage; the grandsons that Jim adored, Dalton Paul and Jacob Mauzy. He is also survived by his father, Wilbert R. Paul and stepmother, Fran (Mulligan) Paul, Cumberland; one sister, Nancy (Paul) Hobbs and husband Douglas, Catonsville; one brother, Gene Paul and wife Amy, Corriganville; and was also blessed by three nephews, two nieces, four grandnephews and three grandnieces.

Jim was loved for his humor and integrity by his family, friends and his dog, Shy. He will be dearly missed in the lives of those who knew him.

Family and friends were received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. and again on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

The funeral service will be conducted at the Mt. Savage United Methodist Church on Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Max Greenfield officiating.

Interment will follow in the Mt. Savage United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be Sam White, Danny Mauzy, Elwood Lashley Jr., Jake Shaffer, Matt Emerick and Bill Mayer. Honorary pallbearers will be Doug Hobbs, Elwood Lashley Sr., Bobby Fuller, Earl Pope and Joseph Carter.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058-5216.
