SHORT GAP, W.Va. — John Edward McCormick, 48, of Short Gap, died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2009, at his residence.

Born Jan. 24, 1961, in Frostburg, he was the son of the late Alexander and Isabel (Shearer) McCormick.

He was also preceded in death by his father-in-law, H. Leo Carroll; and two brothers-in-law, Wayne Carter and Ed Gordon.

John was a graduate of Valley High School.

He had a 20-year career in the U.S. Navy, which included serving in the Persian Gulf War. He was currently an electrician with CSX Railroad.

John attended St. Luke’s Lutheran Church.

He had helped coach baseball when his sons played in Little League.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy (Carroll) McCormick; two sons, Alex McCormick and Terica Powell, Cumberland, and Daniel McCormick, at home; two grandchildren, Madisen McCormick and Devin Kasecamp; two sisters, Janet Knetzer, Oldtown, and Mary Etta Carter, Short Gap; his mother-in-law, Dorothy “Dot” Carroll, Cumberland; two brothers-in-law, R. Scott Carroll and wife Denise, Baltimore, and Kevin Carroll and Ruthie Folk, Cumberland; two sisters-in-law, Cathy Keeney and husband Mike, Baltimore, and Julie Travers and husband Richard, Baltimore; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m.

The funeral service will be conducted at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, 1601 Frederick St., Cumberland, on Friday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Stephen F. Yelovich officiating.

Friends will be received at the church from noon until 1 p.m.

Interment will be in Maryland State Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap, where military honors will be accorded by Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.

Serving as pallbearers will be electricians from CSX.
