M. Leon Simmons

CRESAPTOWN — Mendelssohn Leon Simmons, 83, of Cresaptown, died Saturday, March 22, 2008, at the Frostburg Village Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Born June 20, 1924, in Mount Lookout (Fayette County) W.Va., he was he son of the late Samuel Glyspie Simmons and Mattie E. (Shawver) Simmons. Mr. Simmons was also preceded in death by his wife, Thelma G. (Dyer) Simmons, on Sept. 19, 1988; his second wife, Grace H. Simmons; and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

A United States Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Simmons retired from the Western Maryland Railroad and was a member of the Cresaptown Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2883.

Leon is survived by his daughters, Sharon A. O'Neal and her husband Richard, of Cresaptown, Becky S. Ackerson and her husband John, of Cumberland and Beth Hosier and her husband, Bill, of Rawlings; his grandchildren, Kevin O'Neal, of Williamsburg, Va., Johna Hinkle, of Cumberland, Jennifer Hosier, of Cumberland, SP4 Robby Hosier, currently on duty in Iraq, and Angela Hosier, of Los Angeles, Calif.; as well as four great grandchildren, Ashley O'Neal, Abigail O'Neal, Heinrich and Johnathan Hinkle.

Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com on Monday, March 24, 2008, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

A funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home on Tuesday, March 25, 2008, at 10 a.m. with Pastor Jeannie Marsh officiating.

Interment will be held at Sunset Memorial Park.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff at the Frostburg Village Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the loving and dedicated care given to their father.

The family requests that memorials be made to the Cresaptown United Methodist Church, Post Office Box 5206, Cresaptown, MD 21505.
