To the Editor:

With the nation at war against REAL enemies, it is incredible that the Republican majority, acting as the legislative arm of conservative Christians, declares war on other Americans. This has taken the form of a constitutional amendment that will require discrimination; in the history of our nation, this is unprecedented! The proposed “Marriage Protection Act,” scheduled for a vote in early June, does nothing to protect marriage but does trivialize the Constitution by enshrining religious discrimination and eviscerating core constitutional principles.

If the protection of the “sacred institution of marriage” were their true aim, these defenders of Judeo-Christian morality would also advance similar legislation designed to ban cohabitation, adultery, and divorce itself, these being reality-based threats. However, since the real aim of this amendment is pandering to the religious base using a strategy of smears, fears, and queers, trivializing the Constitution by infringing on the moral choices of the many versus the few would be political suicide and they know it!

Congress should be working for ALL Americans, particularly by exercising oversight of the never-ending Iraqi quagmire, checking the excesses of the executive branch, and advancing legislation designed to promote social uplift.

This amendment failed in 2004, so why will the majority party be tying up the people’s business with it again? Equality, fairness, and freedom from discrimination are fundamentally the American way, so when the majority party wants to use the Constitution as an instrument of religious discrimination versus protection against it, the American people must ask whose agenda the majority works to advance — that of America or a radical political base?
