Mary R. Apple

CUMBERLAND - Mary R. Apple, 100, of Cumberland, went to be with the Lord, Saturday, June 17, 2006, at her residence.

Born Sept. 15, 1905, in Brunswick, she was the daughter of the late George W. and Agnes R. Apple. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Gladys M. Pitzer; and brother, Roy C. Apple. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Miss Apple was a graduate of Allegany High School, Towson Normal School and Frostburg State Normal School. She retired from the teaching profession having taught 50 years at Pennsylvania Avenue School in Allegany County. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church on Virginia Avenue and New Covenant United Methodist Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher and Sunday School secretary.

Surviving are one brother, Dr. John A. Harden and wife Mary Jane, Winchester, Va.; nephew, George W. Pitzer and wife Katherine, Portsmouth, R.I.; niece, Terri Harden Clark, Winchester; two great-nieces, Beth Eddy and husband Darin, Kingston, Mass., and Kim Pitzer, Portsmouth; great-nephew, John W. Pitzer, Wilson Ville, Ore.; and great-niece, Christina Clark, Winchester; great-great-niece, Kaitlyn Mary Eddy, Kingston; and two great-great-nephews, William H. Eddy, Kingston and Dylan Lee, Winchester; and a very special friend and companion, Peggy J. Leer, Cumberland.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, (scarpellifh.com) on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

The Order of the Eastern Star will conduct a service at the funeral home on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at Grace United Methodist Church on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Richard Jewell and the Rev. Lloyd McClarren officiating.

Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Cumberland.

Memorials may be sent to New Covenant United Methodist Church, Millwood Station Fire and Rescue, 250 Costello Drive, Winchester, VA 22601, WMHS Home Hospice, c/o Linda Green, 900 Seton Drive, Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, Western Maryland Food Bank, The Salvation Army, Union Rescue Mission, or the American Red Cross.

Pallbearers will be Ken Hausman, Kenny Hausman, Steve Potts, Greg Frye, Richard Frye, and Sam Leer.

Honorary pallbearers will be Gene Light, Willard House, Tom Wagner, Roger Craze, Bob Wade, Frank DeMundo, John Golightly, Dale Shumaker, Charles "Chuck" Gray, Jeremy Frye, Henry White, and Jim Dolly.
