MOOREFIELD - The assistant chief of the Moorefield Police Department was found not guilty of five charges of sex abuse in the first degree last week in Hardy County Circuit Court.

Galen Ray Reel, 37, of Moorefield, was found not guilty of the five charges following a two-day trial with Judge Donald H. Cookman presiding.

The jury of six men and six women deliberated for about an hour before reaching its verdict Wednesday.

Reel was accused of the charges in connection with an on-duty traffic stop.

The case was prosecuted by Randolph County Prosecuting Attorney Frank Bush Jr., who was appointed as special prosecutor in the case. Reel was represented by Martinsburg attorneys Kevin Mill and Harley Wagner.

Reel's employment status within the police department was planned as a topic of discussion by the Moorefield mayor and council Monday night, according to a Town Hall employee.

Reel was placed on administrative leave from the department when he was charged.
