CARPENDALE, W.Va. — A family of five is homeless after fire swept through their split-level home on Blue Jay Drive early Tuesday afternoon.

Brian and Crystal Pendergast and their three daughters are being assisted by the American Red Cross. Contributions to assist the family may be made through the Go Fund Me website at the “Brian and Crystal Pendergast House Fire Fund.”

Numerous volunteer fire companies from Mineral and Allegany counties and the Cumberland Fire Department responded to the scene following alert at 2:16 p.m., according to Capt. Dan Morris of the Ridgeley Volunteer Fire Department.

Three cats were rescued from the blaze, according to Morris, but a family dog died.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined, pending further investigation.

Morris said the property was insured.

Fire companies returned to the scene for rekindles Wednesday morning about 3 a.m. and again about 12:30 p.m.
