CUMBERLAND — A Cumberland couple face numerous charges after Allegany County sheriff's deputies reported they were running a dogfighting operation in the Flintstone area.
Blair Stephen Carter, 42, and Deborah Kaye Carter, 34, of Shriver Avenue, Cumberland, were charged Friday after police found eight emaciated pit bull dogs at an abandoned residence on M.V. Smith Road on June 17. Police said the dogs were taken to the Allegany County Animal Shelter by county animal control officers.
As part of the investigation, a search warrant was served at a Cumberland residence where deputies located further evidence of dogfighting. Police also recovered a handgun and suspected drugs. An additional pit bull was removed from that residence, police said.
The couple were charged with numerous charges relating to the dogfighting operation, including providing premises for dogfighting and animal cruelty. Blair Carter also faces charges of firearm possession with a felony conviction and drug possession. Deborah Carter also was charged with drug possession.
Blair Carter is being held at the Frederick County Detention Center pending extradition to Allegany County. Deborah Carter was released on personal recognizance pending trial in district court.
The sheriff’s office was assisted in this investigation by Allegany County Animal Control, Cumberland Police Department, C3I, the Allegany County States Attorney’s Office and the Allegany County Animal Shelter.
Deputies said the animal shelter is seeking donations to care for the animals. To donate, call the shelter at 301-777-5930.
