FROSTBURG — A hunter who died Saturday night after falling from a tree stand in western Allegany County was identified Monday as 30-year-old David James Knotts of Frostburg, according to Maryland Natural Resources Police.
Knotts was declared dead by county paramedics at 9:11 p.m., after he was found unresponsive and lying face down at the base of a tree in a remote wooded area off Cabin Run Road, according to NRP spokeswoman Lauren Moses.
The investigation, Moses said, determined that Knotts was not secured by a safety belt or harness. Autopsy by the State Medical Examiner's Office is part of the continuing investigation.
Numerous fire, rescue and police units responded to the scene upon alert just after 8 p.m.
It took up to 40 minutes for first-responders to reach the victim since the location was only accessible on foot, according to Lt. Todd Bowman spokesman for the Allegany County Department of Emergency Services.
