Garrett man charged with attempted murder after alleged assault

Cody Andrew Upole

OAKLAND — A Garrett County man was jailed Monday on attempted murder and other charges after a domestic violence incident that allegedly occurred Sunday at an Oakland home.

The Garrett County Sheriff's Office said Cody Andrew Upole, 25, was charged with attempted first- and second-degree murder, first- and second-degree rape and first- and second-degree assault. He was being held at the Garrett County Jail on Monday and was awaiting a bond hearing.

In a news release, the sheriff's office said deputies were sent to the area of Pine Drive off Gorman Road late Sunday to investigate reports of a woman screaming from a porch for help. That's were they found the victim, who reportedly told deputies she'd been assaulted by Upole on the 700 block of Steyer Mine Road.

The victim escaped the residence and fled on foot to find help, deputies said. She was initially treated at the Garrett Regional Medical Center before being transferred to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.
