LAVALE — Holy Grounds Coffee & Bagel Shop in Burton’s Plaza on National Highway recently celebrated its one-year anniversary.

Owned and operated by LaVale residents Paulette and Dave Porter, the business officially opened its doors to customers on Nov. 19, 2018.

“Most people have gone to a good bagel shop while on vacation, but our area now has its own coffee and bagel shop,” said Paulette Porter. “The delightful smell of freshly baked bagels can be experienced at Holy Grounds each morning. That is one of the many things that we pride ourselves in, the mouthwatering smells that greet the customer when they enter the store.”

The Christian-themed business also offers hot and cold specialty drinks, breakfast, lunch, snacks and desserts, including chocolate-covered strawberries. Homemade pepperoni rolls also are a specialty.

After spending many years volunteering on the Cumberland National Day of Prayer committee and serving as a board member for 1st Way Pregnancy Center, Paulette Porter set out on the mission to provide quality food while serving all who enter and continuing her ministry.

The business plays Christian music and features Christian decor, a prayer box and prayer wall. Paulette Porter will pray with residents or for them. The shop has a small library where customers can read a book or check out a book for two weeks at no cost. Two 12 foot by 12 foot conference rooms are available for use for private events, gatherings or small parties.

Options include table seating, booths and casual cushioned chairs around a rustic wooden table. Special events have included a performance by a Christian comedian, music and a Veterans Day promotion.

Breakfast is available all day and lunch options include bagel sandwiches, wraps and soups. Holy Grounds offers lunch delivery, deliveries for large orders and can provide catering with advance notice.

The business, which is closed Sundays, is open Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Saturday 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

In addition, family member Betsy Porter started operating Betsy’s Bakery out of the shop on Nov. 27, preparing pies, scones, cookies and other baked goods.
