PATTERSON CREEK, W.Va.— An Old Furnace Road couple was left homeless Friday by a pre-dawn fire that swept through their residence.

Ernie Weaver and his wife escaped the blaze that broke out about 3:35 a.m., Wiley Ford Volunteer Fire Chief Sean Malone said, but the property and its contents were declared a total loss.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, although there was no indication of anything suspicious at the scene, Malone said.

The fire was brought under control about 30 minutes after the arrival of first units alerted by Mineral and Allegany County 911 emergency centers.

Fire briefly extended into a nearby wooded area.

One firefighter was checked at the scene for possible injury, but declined medical treatment.

Wiley Ford, Patterson Creek, Ridgeley, Short Gap, Fort Ashby, LaVale and District 16 volunteer fire companies responded and were on the call for nearly three hours.

The victims were reportedly staying at other accommodations at the same location where the fire occurred.
