Rawlings man seriously injured in U.S. 220 motorcycle crash

A Rawlings man was seriously injured Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2019, when his motorcycle was hit by a suspected drunken driver on U.S. Route 220 at the state Route 956 intersection.

RAWLINGS — A 21-year-old Rawlings man was seriously injured Tuesday night when his motorcycle was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of U.S. Route 220 and state Route 956, the Allegany County Sheriff's Office said.

Tanner Van Meter was operating a Harley-Davidson southbound on U.S. 220 when a Ford pickup driven by Todd Sloane, 62, of Ridgeley, West Virginia, pulled into the path of the motorcycle, deputies said.

Sloane, who was later charged with driving under the influence, was attempting to turn left onto Route 956 when the accident occurred about 8:43 p.m., police said.

Van Meter was initially taken by Cresaptown Volunteer Fire Department ambulance to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries. He was later transferred to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma in Baltimore, police said. His condition was not available. 

Crash reconstruction teams with the sheriff's office and Cumberland Police Department are continuing to investigate the collision.

Route 220 was closed for about two hours during the investigation.
