FROSTBURG — The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will replace the Parkersburg Road bridge (state Route 638) over the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. The project is scheduled to begin June 14.
The bridge, which is 30-foot long, will be replaced with a similar style bridge called a “Mabey Bridge.”
The new bridge will be in place and the road will reopen June 28, weather permitting.
A nearly five-mile detour will use U.S. Route 40 Alternate (National Highway) and state Route 36 (Mount Savage Road).
Crews will also close a single lane near the assembly area at the end of the bridge. Access to homes will have access up to the closure, except on Snow Bird Lane, where the detour route will be necessary.
About 1,500 vehicles per day cross the bridge, so motorists are encouraged to provide extra travel time during the project.
