CUMBERLAND — Three people, including a child, were injured when a tractor-trailer and a second vehicle crashed late Wednesday morning on eastbound Interstate 68 at Haystack Mountain, according to the Allegany County Department of Emergency Services Division.
All eastbound lanes were closed by the crash that occurred at about 10:30 a.m.
The tractor-trailer reportedly jackknifed and the vehicle was under the trailer. The rig was on its side.
The injured were taken to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center for treatment of their injuries. First-responders reportedly took about 20 minutes to free them from the wreckage.
Maryland State Police troopers were detouring eastbound traffic to Vocke Road for travel to points east of LaVale.
“Citizens should avoid the area and use the appropriate detours,” Emergency Services Director James Pyles said. “The roadway is going to be closed for a considerable amount of time as crews remove the vehicles, one being a tractor- trailer.”
Units from Cumberland Fire Department, LaVale Volunteer Fire Department, LaVale Rescue Squad, Cresaptown Volunteer Fire Department ambulance, Allegany County Department of Emergency Services EMS Division and Special Operations and State Highway Administration responded to the scene upon alert by the Allegany County 911 emergency center.
