CUMBERLAND — A water main break in the Henderson Avenue area near Baltimore Street at about 2 a.m. and a fire in a vehicle on National Highway at Red Hill four hours later shut down both roadways for a short time Thursday.

No injuries were reported in either incident.

The 16-inch water main break in the city occurred on Henderson Avenue near Glenn Street, prompting Cumberland Police to close that roadway between Charles and Glenn streets.

Traffic was being rerouted to Decatur Street because of the incident and motorists were being advised to avoid the area.

Cumberland water and street department crews and police responded to the area where traffic patterns were modified earlier in the week by the demolition of the former Brunswick Hotel on Baltimore Street that closed the railroad crossing to through traffic. Removal of demolition debris continued there Thursday at first light as city workers addressed the nearby water main problem.

In LaVale, it was just before 6 a.m. when fire occurred in a passenger vehicle on U.S. Route 40 near the LaVale Plaza shopping center. LaVale Volunteer Fire Department and Maryland State Police responded to the scene before the vehicle was towed from the area.

Allegany County 911 emergency center handled communications for the LaVale incident.
