C. William Gilchrist Museum of the Arts holding opening reception for seasonal exhibit

“Peaceful Farm,” an oil painting by Craig Etchison, is part of the annual Art For Giving exhibition at the C. William Gilchrist Museum of the Arts.

CUMBERLAND — An opening reception for the Art for Giving exhibition will be held Nov. 29 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the C. William Gilchrist Museum of the Arts, 104 Washington St.

The event is free and open to the public. The exhibition, which is assembled annually to promote holiday shopping purchases, continues until Dec. 22 and features more than 40 artworks, including jewelry, sculptures, watercolors, oil paintings and mixed media.

Items purchased can immediately be taken home, unlike most exhibitions when one must wait until the exhibition ends.

Entrance to the museum is free and hours of operatoin are Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.

There will be refreshments at the opening, which has been scheduled so visitors can have time to attend the  downtown Christmas tree lighting ceremony. “So bring family and friends to celebrate the season,” said Gilchrist representative Penny Knobel-Besa. “Children will enjoy visiting the two large doll houses that are on display while you shop for holiday gifts.”

The museum is housed in a house built in 1843 with floor-to-ceiling mirrors, several marble fireplaces and unique French chandeliers and will be decorated for the season.

The buidling is available to be rented for special events like holiday parties, weddings and business meetings. Residents may leave a message inquiring about special events bookings at 410-967-9112.
