CUMBERLAND — The Maryland Theatre Arts Company will hold auditions and sign-ups for its March production of “Seussical, the Musical” on Jan. 6 from 6 to 7 p.m. at LaVale United Methodist Church, 565 National Highway.

The nonprofit children’s theater group has been producing shows in the tri-state area for more than 20 years.

“Seussical” is a musical stage production of Dr. Seuss’ Horton the Elephant story narrated by the Cat in the Hat and including the Whos and many of the famous author’s most well-known characters. It is a tale of friendship, duty, loyalty and protecting others.

The production will take place at the Cumberland Theatre March 6 through 8. Rehearsals will be held at the LaVale church on Monday evenings at 6 p.m. There will also be additional rehearsals on Tuesday evenings for leading characters, as needed.

In case of inclement weather, auditions will be rescheduled for Jan. 7, also from 6 to 7 p.m.

All children ages 4-18 who are interested in being in the production are encouraged attend the audition. Those seeking leading roles will be asked to sing a song of their choice without music. Everyone else is welcome to audition but may also just come and sign up for the production if they so choose.

Because MTA always includes every child who desires to be in a show, all children, ages 4-18, who come to audition or sign up, will be cast in the production. There are no age restrictions and parents are welcome to participate with their children if they wish to do so. There is no tuition for the program, but each cast member is required to sell program ads to help defray the production costs.

The Maryland Theatre Arts Company is dedicated to helping children and young people experience the dramatic arts for themselves in an enjoyable way, by participating in, or viewing, fun, quality productions especially for children and families and is sponsored in part by a grant from the Allegany Arts Council.
