LITTLE ORLEANS — Two people died and two others were injured early Friday in a single-vehicle crash on U.S. Route 40 in eastern Allegany County. Alcohol may been a factor in the accident, Maryland State Police said.

The crash occurred about 1 a.m. near Sidling Hill Creek when a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt traveling east left the road and struck a tree and pole.

Police identified the victims as Matthew Glaze, 24, of Cumberland, and Allen Welch, 18, of Hancock. Both men were back-seat passengers and ejected from the vehicle. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, Mariah Shoemaker, 18, of Hancock, was taken to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center for treatment of injuries, and a passenger, Shawna Mason, 19, of Hancock, was taken to Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown.

The accident remains under investigation by the Maryland State Police Crash Team. Rescue units from Allegany and Washington counties, as well as Morgan County, West Virginia, responded.

Police said consultation will be made with the Allegany County State’s Attorney’s Office regarding possible charges.
