I am the author of the book, “The Last Civil War Veterans; The Lives of the Final Survivors, State-by-State.”

Over the years, I have been able to find photographs of all the last Civil War survivors who passed away in 49 out of 50 states. Unfortunately, I have been unable to find an image of the last man who was a resident of Maryland and died within the state.

I wonder if any of your readers from Cumberland or the surrounding communities can come up with a photograph of James M. Reed. His remains rest in Rose Hill Cemetery, Crypt C83, Cumberland.

He was a member of the 8th and later the 191st Pennsylvania Infantry before his discharge. Reed was once a farmer and in later years worked for the railroad. Born 1846, he died in 1946.
