Organization slates ‘Let’s Beautify LaVale Day’

The birds are singing, the flowers are blooming and the sidewalks are dirty. It’s that time of the year again. The thick remnants of the grit and gravel used to battle the winter storms lay heavy along the sidewalks of LaVale.

Saturday, April 10, has been designated as “Let’s Beautify LaVale Day.” The officers of the LaVale Civic Improvement Association will join forces with volunteers to finish sweeping the sidewalks along the National Highway streetscape from the traffic light at the corner of Long Drive along National Highway up to the Maryland State Police barrack and around the corner along Campground Road.

Residential homeowners/renters, churches and commercial establishments are encouraged to sweep the sidewalks and remove any trash from in front of their homes and businesses along National Highway before April 10, or join the volunteers on the morning of the 10th for the final clean sweep. The salt and abrasives should be swept over the curb and into the bike lane along the highway.

The State Highway Administration will complete a street sweeping later in the month to clean up the grit and gravel from the bike lane. Watch for the SHA’s signs about restricted parking during the street sweeping.

We welcome everyone wishing to help sweep, to come with push brooms, shovels and/or leaf blowers and meet, for further directions, in the back parking lot of LaVale United Methodist Church at 9 a.m. on April 10. Masks are encouraged to help protect from dust. Safety vests, safety glasses and bottled water will be available to volunteers. The rain and/or bad weather date will be Saturday, April 17.

For any questions about the “clean sweep,” call 301-697-1141. Visit the website at for more information about the LaVale Civic Improvement Association.

All residents of the tri-state area are invited to take advantage of what LaVale has to offer. Visit the stores and restaurants or just walk along the lighted streetscape and enjoy the beauty of the area.
