CUMBERLAND - Raymond P. Staudenmeier, affectionately known as "Pappy Ray," 79, of Cumberland, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 20, 2007, at WMHS - Memorial Campus. By his side were his loving wife Georgia and many family members.

Born in Ashland, Pa., on Aug. 30, 1927, he was the late son of Caroline (Schue) and Frank Staudenmeier and the youngest of 10. He graduated in 1945 from Ashland High School. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Williams; and five brothers, Joe, John, George, Francis and Lawrence Staudenmeier. Six of Ray's brothers served in World War II at the same time; all six survived.

Surviving are his wife, Georgia; two daughters, Geraldine Smith and husband Chester, Sheila Harden and husband Don; one son, Arthur Rice and wife Betty, all of Cumberland; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; three brothers, Leonard Staudenmeier and Lewis Staudenmeier, both of Ashland, William Staudenmeier, Eureka, Ill.; and one sister, Elizabeth O.S.F. in residence in Aspen.

Ray worked as a supervisory engineer for Groves Construction Company for many years until his retirement. He also supervised the building of dams in Africa and Pakistan. Many of his retirement years were spent in Tampa, Fla., before returning to Cumberland. Ray was a devout Catholic. He attended St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Centre Street, Cumberland.

Ray never met a stranger. He always had a smile on his face, a story to tell and a warm and generous spirit. He never missed a day of school, a day of work or rooting for the fighting Irish of Notre Dame. He will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him. He will forever live in our hearts.

The family would like to extend their deep appreciation for the wonderful care given to them and Ray by the ICU staff at the Memorial Campus.

Donations in his memory may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Ashland at St. Mauritius Cemetery where Ray's family is at rest.
