CUMBERLAND — The companion of former Cumberland resident Derrick Powell, 22, who is accused of killing a Delaware police officer, will testify as a witness against Powell, according to court documents.

Christopher Reeves, 20, of Lincoln, Del., will be represented by a court-appointed attorney at the request of the public defender’s office, which is already representing Powell.

Powell is charged with shooting to death Georgetown Patrolman Chad Spicer on Sept. 1.

Reeves was driving a vehicle that Spicer and fellow officer Cpl. Shawn Brittingham chased from the The Circle in Georgetown, Del., into the Kimmeytown neighborhood. The police vehicle struck Reeves’ vehicle before it stopped. Reeves ran before Powell allegedly fired a single shot from the back seat of the vehicle, striking Spicer in the face and wounding Brittingham in the neck. Spicer succumbed to his injuries after being taken to a hospital. Brittingham was released from the hospital the day after the shootting.

Reeves was on the run for four days before he surrendered at the urging of his mother, police said. He has since been charged with two counts of violation of probation, resisting arrest and failure to stop at the command of a police officer.

Powell is charged with first-degree murder, three counts of possessing a firearm during a felony, burglary, reckless endangerment and resisting arrest. The state has not yet indicated whether it will seek the death penalty.

Powell was arrested at a nearby residence where he was found holding a 9 mm handgun, a Colt 2000 semiautomatic with one live round in the chamber and three in the magazine, according to a state police homicide detective’s testimony in a preliminary hearing earlier this month.

A third man in the vehicle, Luis Flores, reportedly attempted to help Spicer after the officer was shot. Flores was questioned and released.

Powell and Reeves remained incarcerated Wednesday at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center in Smyrna. The prison is located in southern New Castle County.
