With no new road-kills since July 26, the highway bear mortality in Maryland remains at 26 for the year, according to an unofficial count kept by the Cumberland Times-News.

Clarissa Harris of the Maryland Wildlife & Heritage Service said on Aug. 4 a dead bear was discovered by a landowner along Hardman Road just east of Cumberland. “The cause of death is not known,” Harris said. “It was a female estimated to weigh 85 pounds and was quite decomposed.”

The 2014 Maryland Black Bear Lottery is open and will continue through Sunday, Aug. 31. Hunters will be able to apply through their DNR COMPASS account http://compass.

dnr.maryland.gov/dnrcompassportal or via telephone at 1-855-855-3906.

There are 450 permits.

To apply, each applicant must pay a $15 nonrefundable fee and may only enter once.
