MCHENRY — Peyton Carr went 4 for 4, Brandon Lucas homered and Isaac Upole and Bradie Moore combined on a three-hitter, helping Garrett County open its American Legion baseball season with a 7-4 win over Preston County Monday night at Garrett College.
Garrett scored single runs in the first three innings and led 6-0 after a three-run fourth.
Preston got back into it with four unearned runs after two were out in the top of the fifth, slicing the score to 6-4.
Garrett tacked on an additional insurance run on a solo homer by Lucas in the sixth.
Carr had four of Garrett’s nine hits, all four being singles, and scored a run to lead a nine-hit attack.
Cory Ashby added a single and two RBIs.
Upole pitched the first 4 2/3 innings, allowed three hits, walked seven and struck out five for the win. Bradie Moore earned a save with 2 1/3 hitless innings of relief.
Buddy Williams hit a two-run single for Preston.
Garrett will host Fort Cumberland in the first Mountain District game today, at 5:30 p.m., at Garrett College.
The Mountain District will again be the host of the state tournament, which is scheduled to begin on July 29 at the Hot Stove Complex.
