HAGERSTOWN — Ali Puerto switched positions in the second half and helped the Bishop Walsh girls to a historical win, defeating St. James for the first time, 2-1, in high school girls soccer action.
Puerto, who was the first-half goalie, scored twice in the second half with the tie-breaking and eventual game-winning goal coming with 3:26 to play. Both goals were assisted by Arianna Harrera.
St. James led 1-0 off of Skylaer Treadwell’s direct kick goal 3:32 before halftime.
Puerto’s tying goal came with 32:16 showing.
Both teams had six shots on goal.
Puerto made two saves in the first half and Sarah Wharton stopped three in the second half for the Spartans.
Lauren Auila stopped three for the Saints (1-1).
Bishop Walsh (3-2), winners of three of its last four games, visits Petersburg on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
Allegany sweeps at Southern Garrett Classic
OAKLAND — Jordan Chaney scored unassisted at 19:38 of the second half to lift Allegany over Southern, 1-0, Saturday in the Southern Garrett Classic in girls high school soccer play.
Katie Sterne had four saves in goal for the Campers, while Hannah Nazelrod had five for Southern. Allegany held a 1-0 edge in corners.
In the Campers’ second game of the classic, they defeated Northern, 2-0. Skylar Ellsworth scored unassisted at 20:36 of the first half, and again at 20:26 of the second half to provide the offense.
Sterne had two saves in goal for Alco and Ava Ranken had 13 for Northern. Neither team had a corner kick.
Allegany (2-0) will host Mountain Ridge on Tuesday, 7 p.m., at Greenway Avenue Stadium. The junior varsity plays at 5:30 p.m.
Fort Hill finished tied with both Southern and Northern.
Against the Rams, they battled to a 0-0 final.
The Rams had 11 shots on goal to Fort Hill’s two as Hannah Nazelrod had both.
The Sentinels and Huskies played to a 1-1 tie.
Northern’s Kylie Barnes scored first unassisted and the Sentinels’ Katie Kowalski tied it with a penalty kick.
Northern outshot Fort Hill in penalty kicks and trailed in corner kicks, 2-1.
Ava Rankin and Kylie Barnes split goalie duties by halves with each saving two. The Sentinels’ Hailey Trenton stopped five shots.
Southern visits Northern tonight and is at Mountain Ridge on Thursday. Both games begin at 6 p.m.
