Patriots to register today

CUMBERLAND — The CAYFL Patriots will hold player registration on Sunday, at 6 p.m., in front of Greenway Avenue Stadium.

Any boy ages 10 to 14 who attends or lives in the Washington Middle School district is eligible to play for the Patriots.

Independence 5K, 1.5-mile walk July 2

KEYSER, W.Va — The Keyser Kiwanis Breakfast Club will sponsor its 22nd  Independence 5K Run and 1.5-Mile Walk Saturday, July 2, 8:30 a.m., in South Keyser. Proceeds benefit community projects sponsored by the club.

The 5K is run on a circuit course beginning and ending at the Keyser Swimming Pool’s east parking lot. This is a flat course entirely on paved roads.

The overall male and female winners of the 5K Run will be receive awards.  Awards will go to the top three finishers in the following men’s age groups 15U, 16–19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60– 69 and 70 and over.  Women's age group awards are the same up to 50 and over. The 1.5-mile walk is a non-competitive event.

Pre-race registration postmarked by June 25 is $15. The entry fee is $18 for entries postmarked after that date and on race day. Walk registration is $10 with no late fee. Race-day sign-up will be from 7 to 8:15 a.m. in the pool’s west parking lot. T-shirts are guaranteed to the first 90 entrants.

Following the 5K, the club will sponsor the Firecracker ¼-Mile, a free run for children 10 years-old and under. Parents must register their child on a waiver form. Each participant will receive a certificate, T-shirt, and prize bag.

BW Middle football registration June 25

CUMBERLAND — Any student of Bishop Walsh Middle School or Calvary Christian Academy, entering grades 6-8, wishing to play or cheer for the CAYFL Bishop Walsh Middle School football team must register by attending a meeting Saturday, June 25, 1 pm, in the Bishop Walsh School cafeteria, or by calling Jeff Rhodes at 301-707-2890 or Cathy Corley 301-724-9009.

Mountain Ridge golf tournament July 15

FROSTBURG — The second Mountain Ridge boys basketball golf tournament will take place Friday, July 15, 1 p.m., at Maplehurst Country Club. Proceeds will benefit the Mountain Ridge boys and girls basketball teams as well as the youth programs at Mountain Ridge.

Girls softball tournaments slated

HYNDMAN, Pa. — Two girls fastpitch softball tournaments have been scheduled at Hyndman High School.

The first, for U-12 all-star teams, will be held July 1-3. The second, for U-10 all-star teams, is planned for July 8-10.

The entry fee for either tournament is $100 and two softballs. The first eight teams to enter will be accepted.

All-Area nominations for baseball, softball teams being accepted

CUMBERLAND — Nominations for the Cumberland Times-News All-Area baseball and softball teams are now being accepted.

High school coaches are requested to nominate players from their teams. Nominated players will be placed on an All-Area ballot, which coaches will use to select this year’s All-Area team.

Coaches should provide the name, grade, position (pitcher, catcher, infielder, outfielder or designated hitter or player) and all notable statistics for each nominated player. Players may be nominated at only one position.

L.L., softball photos deadline Monday

CUMBERLAND — Team photographs of little league baseball teams and youth softball teams should be submitted to the Times-News so they can appear in the annual Little League/Softball Section to be published Wednesday, June 22. Photos received after Monday, June 13, 11:59 p.m., will not appear in the section.

The Little League/Softball Section is designed to recognize each and every team in the area from all of the various leagues. Therefore, no other little league or youth softball team photos will appear in the Times-News after the June 22 section is published, including championship teams from the various leagues or tournaments.

The name of the team and the name of the league in which the particular team plays must be clearly identified with e-mailed photos or on the back of hard-copy photos.

Photos can be e-mailed to, or brought in to the Times-News editorial department, using the door on the S. Mechanic Street side of the building.

All photographs should be earmarked “Little League Section.”

The Times-News will not mail hard-copy photographs back to contributors but will keep the photos for one month after the section is published so they can be picked up.
