CUMBERLAND — Alissa Twigg scored 18 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead Fort Hill over Mountain Ridge 52-50 in a nail-biter Thursday night at Fort Hill.
The Sentinels took control of the game early on, holding Mountain Ridge to just 10 first quarter points and just eight more in the second to take a 13-point advantage into the locker room.
Mountain Ridge fought back in the third quarter and cut the lead to three heading into the final period.
Fort Hill was able to hold off the second half surge and escape with a two-point victory to improve to 2-0 to start the season.
Alisha Jackson had 12 points and seven rebounds and Mariah James recorded 10 points and five assists for the Sentinels.
Carlie Lewis scored 14 points for Mountain Ridge and Shae Winner added 13.
Mountain Ridge won the jayvee contest 40-25, led by 16 points from Lexy Metz. Emma Bauer had six for Fort Hill.
Fort Hill hosts Hedgesville Tuesday at 7:30.
Mountain Ridge falls to 0-2 and hosts Bishop Walsh Monday.
Southern 48, Keyser 29
OAKLAND — Southern was outstanding on defense, defeating Keyser to win its first game of the year Thursday night at Southern.
Keyser was held to seven first quarter points and just seven more in the second. in suffering its first loss.  Southern went into the break leading by 12.
The Rams pulled away in the third, taking a 19-point advantage into the fourth and went on to win by 17.
Hannah Horne led Southern with 12 points, Raeslee Weimer added 10 and Alicia Horner recorded eight points and eight rebounds.
Samantha Hoban scored nine points and Markisha Coleman had eight for Keyser.
Keyser won the jayvee game 38-31. Erica White led Keyser with 11 points and Alicia Roth scored 16 for Southern.
Southern (1-1) plays at Hampshire on Tuesday at 7:30.
Keyser falls to 2-1 and hosts Frankfort Tuesday at 7:30.
