PARKTON —  Sophia Brown finished second and was one of five Northern Garrett girls to finish in the top 20 and lead the Huskies to the Maryland Class 1A girls cross country championship on Saturday at Hereford High School.

Brown crossed the finish line in 20:44 behind Smithsburg’s Daylie Younker, the individual champion with a time of 20:26.13.

Northern edged out Brunswick 40-45 for the team championship. Smithsburg (96) was third followed by Bohemia Manor (128), Cambridge-South Dorchester (145). Allegany (185) was sixth out of 12 complete teams.

The Huskies’ Ella Ashby crossed in eighth place at 21:25. Teammates Minka Amtower and Arrisyn Amtower were next at 13th (22:05) and 15th (22:13), respectively. Ella Warnick was 20th (22:46).

Allegany’s top two finishers were Emily Evans and Trinity Imes at 44 (24:23) and 45 (24:26) followed by Samantha Kelly (48th, 24:42), Madison Devore (51st, 24:49), Olivia Klemm (52nd, 24:58) and Charlotte Taylor (55th, 25:08).

Other finishers were Northern’s Tiffany Niner (63rd, 25:47) and Nicole Savage (66th, 26:14) while Allegany’s Olivia Campbell finished 78th (27:29).

Allegany finished fourth in the boys meet with 102 points and Northern crossed in seventh place (137) out of 19 teams. Williamsport won the overall team title with 49 points as Wildcat senior Zane Chalker took the individual title with a time of 16:00.47. The state mark set by Smithsburg’s Will Merritt in 2016 is 15:54.60. 

The Leopards (97) were a distant second and just ahead of Pikesville (99). Brunswick came in fifth (123) and Bohemia Manor (130) was sixth.

Northern’s Garrison Barlow was the area’s highest finisher, crossing the line fourth at 17:08. Allegany runners starting with Kole Morgan at 13th (17:39) took four of the next 10 places. Samuel Davis was 14th (17:47), Wyatt Gray 18th (17:57) and Logan Trautwein 22nd (18:09).

Northern’s Carder Stakem came in 25th (18:16) and Southern’s Drew Helbig was 29th (18:31). Northern’s Ashton Sober 39th (18:52), Jayen Fike 42nd (18:58), Ian White 46th (18:59) and Ethyn Peck finished 47th (19:00).

Allegany’s Mitchell Septoff came in 56th (19:22) followed by Northern’s Daniel Brenneman 65th (19:53) and the Campers’ Cole Fiscus was 83rd (20:42).
