William J. Byrnes

FROSTBURG — William J. Byrnes, 87, of Frostburg, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008 at the WMHS Frostburg Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Born March 6, 1921 in Eckhart, he was the son of the late Bernard J. Byrnes and Loretta (Maher) Byrnes. Mr. Byrnes was also preceded in death by his wife, Anna Helen (Dean) Byrnes who died June 13, 1981; and three brothers, John Byrnes, Bernard Byrnes and Tom Byrnes. William was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Mr. Byrnes was Catholic by faith.

Upon graduation from Beall High School in 1941, Bill began working, as many did, at the Celanese Corporation. He soon joined the U.S. Army serving as a sergeant in the 90th Chemical Mortar Battalion. He was so proud to serve his country and his family members often heard of his World War II experiences. Upon his return from the war Bill worked at the Cumberland Times-News. He left Cumberland for a few years to work at the Washington Post but returned to the Times-News and worked there as a night pressman until his retirement in 1986.

Bill loved the Jersey shore, camping and fishing at Rocky Gap State Park and Little Orleans campgrounds and spending time with his family and constant canine companion, Thunder.

He is survived by his son, William Dean Byrnes of Frostburg; one grandson, Gregory Dean Byrnes and wife Brenda of Grantsville; one granddaughter, Amy Byrnes Brown and husband David of Frostburg; four great grandchildren, William Jacob Byrnes, Christopher, Michael and Abby Cutler, all of Grantsville.

Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Friday from 3 to 6 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 10 a.m. with Deacon Paul Passauer officiating.

Interment will be in the Frostburg Memorial Park. Military honors will be accorded at graveside by the Farrady Post 24 Honor Guard.

Pallbearers will be David Brown, Tom Langley, Joe Goodwin and John Martin.

The family would like to express their deep appreciation to the nursing home staff at WMHS Frostburg Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their superb care and kindnesses.
